The magnolia project this year has started again and a small group of enthusiastic cutters meet in the old “paper depot” shed (now renamed the magnolia shed) every second Saturday morning from 8.30 – 12.00.

The quality of the magnolias at this stage in the season is excellent and we hope that we will receive top dollars from the flower market. The average price fluctuates each week depending on the number of other suppliers providing foliage and the quality of the leaves.

Whilst at times we do get a little desponded with the amount fetched, we believe that this is a worthwhile project to continue. Every dollar raised goes directly into funding our youth worker at Pakuranga College and if that little bit of money can assist with an “At Risk” student then we feel our time is well spent.

If you have a spare hour on a Saturday morning and would like to join us we would love to have you participate in this project with us. All you need is a pair of secateurs (we do have some spare). It is not onerous and we enjoy each other’s company in the process. We also welcome any muffins or scones on the morning if you would prefer. We look forward to seeing you join us.

This year pickings from the Magnolia hedge at the far end of the church car park yielded nearly $1000.00.

When we go to various funding agencies to ask for money this gives us an example of how we are raising funds ourselves.

The Saturday mornings spent with a wonderful group of workers are so much more than just fund-raising. It is also great relationship and team building. The last thing the group did was to mulch all the waste wood branches and fertilise the trees.

Along with some extra trimming this has left the hedge in good condition in

preparation for another year.

Thanks to all who have helped with this project, especially for the kind donation of fertilizer

made by John McLaren.
