Riaan Van Schalkwyk

Comittee Chair

Riaan has filled the role of Clinical Psychologist since 1982 and has a strong passion for Youth. He believes this is the time great gains and losses can be made in life. The ability of youth to make significant adjustments is legendary. He insists investing into the human capital of our youth is far sighted.

I was a voluntary youth leader for three years while in my early twenties and later had 16 years of paid employment which involved me in youth work including five years as a full time community youth worker.  I also have experience as a father of two (currently aged 21 and 19).

I am passionate about the Trust because it is one way for me to contribute positively to the young people in our area and so affect the well-being of our community.  The Trust is committed to working collaboratively with others to achieve this which is also an important value for my life.

As the Chairman of the Trust and the Minister of Howick Presbyterian Church I can provide a bridge between the two organisations.  My experience of working for a Youth Trust provides insight into some of the possibilities we have and some pitfalls to avoid.  Leading a church gives me skills in guiding an organisation, keeping it focused and accountable.

I feel that I am so privileged to work in an environment where Christian values and moral standards are an integral part of our students learning.    Having worked in educational administration for over 20 years, I witness first hand the challenges and temptations that  our youth face today and being involved with YCDT is an opportunity for me to contribute in a practical and meaningful way to the wellbeing of the next generation.    With two children who are now into their adult years (25 & 28) I have experienced the pressures and challenges of being a parent in this ever demanding environment.

Trust Board Member

Mike is a professional civil engineer and a principal in a large engineering, surveying and town planning consultancy.

He has always had a strong interest in the well-being of young people and served on PTA’s and boards of trustees throughout his son and daughter’s school careers.

Mike recognizes that the teenage years can be difficult ones and that surviving them amidst the negative pressures of today’s society can be very challenging.  He is particularly saddened by the pervasive binge drinking culture that negatively affects the lives of so many young people.

Mike sees the Trust as terrific means of providing support to young people in a manner that may help them avoid life’s pitfalls and make life choices that will lead them to maturity and well adjusted, successful adulthood.  He believes that while the future can never be certain it should not be without hope, or be despairing.  The present may have challenges, but with support these can be overcome.
