On the 6th to the 21st of September, I had the privilege to attend Young Life international’s New Staff training in the Philippines. Over the course of two weeks, I have learned the core values of Young Life International and how they spread the message of Christ to teens and their community. People attended from nations all over Australasia. It was a great and heart-warming experience for me and my team.

Our schedule consisted of a 6am wake up followed up by a 7.30 breakfast. By 9am we are all heading inside their centre to attend a 4 hour seminar that is divided into two parts, the first part consists of reading and understanding the Bible and memorizing verses. Then, we get one of young life’s international staff to come and talk about the topic being taught on the day. Each seminar was not only a great insight to young life’s core values but also a great insight in the many countries that Young Life is a part of. We discussed what works and what does not work when it comes to interacting with kids, and spreading the message of Christ in our respected community. It was a very humbling experience hearing stories from countries that are not so welcoming to the Christian faith. How they go about spreading the love of Christ in their schools is something I could never have imagined.

After the seminar, we would have lunch and then a 2 hour break to rest and gather our things for the next activity, which is going into schools and meeting with the local kids. We were all separated and assigned into different groups to go into the different high- schools around the city of Cebu. Our group was assigned to the high schools and elementary schools of Barangay Pardo. We had a great time meeting the students and it was amazing to see them open up to us, who are foreigners in their community. This was only credit towards the amazing work already happening there and only made me think of how awesome it would be if teenagers in our community also had the attitude of not being anti-adults and be more open towards healthy adult interactions. It was also amazing to have met and interacted with the volunteers and staff that work and devote their time in serving their community and interact with the students.

All in all, new staff training was an amazing experience, I have learned so much throughout the whole trip. It was a privilege to have met and spent time with people who have the same vision of taking care of young people and letting them know about the love of Christ. The next step now is to apply what we have learned within our community.
