What we do

 

Through collaboration with Young Life New Zealand Trust and other agencies, the YCDT places quality youth workers in our local colleges and wider community. Through building positive long-lasting relationships, youth workers are able to communicate essential life skills, foster identity and strengths, encourage leadership development, and empower integration into the wider community.

 

Presently, the YCDT’s primary role is to provide funding for the placement of two part time paid youth workers in Pakuranga College. We support Young Life’s aim to increase the number of paid youth workers up to 12 in Pakuranga College along with the development of the service in other willing schools.  Our goal for 2014 is to generate funds to support four part time workers.  YCDT also provides another layer of oversight and support as we endeavour with Young Life to maximise the benefit to the schools and minimise the chance of any action which would bring the youth work programme in to disrepute.

 

Youth workers support young people in a variety of ways in school and in the community. Focusing on being present with young people for the long term our youth workers also provide:

• Guidance Counsellor Assistance. Our service helps guidance counsellors spend more time with the students who need higher-level input, by referring students to us who may benefit from a mentor.

• Student Leadership Development

• Strengths – Based life coaching

• Peer Support Programme Assistance

• Sports Coaching and Management

• Lunchtime Activities

• Motivational speaking at school assemblies

• Mentoring lead students

• Specific programmes to foster courage, identity and resilience

• Restorative Justice and much more.
