So far the Shine program has been a success in Pakuranga College. As with any new project, we have learnt how and how not to do it and are anticipating an improved future program for next year. One of my favourite sessions this far has been the session underneath the STRENGTH topic, called "My decisions determine my destination". This session followed one titled "I have the power of choice", and concluded that because we have the power to choose, we must also understand the consequences of our decisions, good or bad. The session concluded with a gift-giving time, where each of the girls chose from a selection of coloured ribbons.
Each colour represented a different strength or characteristic. We went around the room and gave each other a coloured ribbon for the strength we saw in that person. It was such a simple exercise yet the response was electric. We took turns tying ribbons on each other's wrists, and telling that person why we had chosen that ribbon for them. Once again, I was astounded to realize that many of the girl's had not been told that they had strengths, had not heard the words "You are resilient, you are influential, you are kind". It was such a privilege to watch their eyes light up with encouragement, and to see them delight in being generous as they complimented their peers. Best job ever!
